Dialogue with Mr. Rt. Hon. Robert J. L. Hawke

Tang: Thank you very much, Mr. Wirt. The following is the interactive dialogue session. Let's invite senior managers from renowned enterprises in the Asian-Pacific regions to engage in dialogue with our guests. I have received a number of questions. Here is a question for Mr. Hawke: Mr. Hawke, you have just mentioned in your speech that China is growing through harmonious economic and trade development, and you also agree with the concept of "harmonious world, interdependence and common development" raised by President Hu Jintao. So what kind of positive role do you think the harmonious integration of the global economy will play in the development of the relationship among countries?

Mr Hawke: I am not sure if I have fully understood this question, but I will try my best to answer it. As for this question, I think you can find the points in my speech. In the past 29 years, China's economic development I think is mainly a kind of the "harmonious integration to the global economy". China's economic rise is like this for the outside world. China's economic development provides an opportunity to its neighboring countries rather than a threat. Therefore, this is mainly based on the understanding of the concept of personal interests, but not on different individuals, different groups or different countries.

Well, what does it mean by harmony? In the United States or European countries, at the very beginning, china was regarded as a threat. However, more and more people have realized that China's development is actually an opportunity for us. If we look into china's different industries, we can find different opinions on them, especially from the United States. For instance, for the export of China's manufacturing industries, certainly there are some negative impacts. But for the US, it is a big positive impact, for the American consumers directly benefit from Chinese products with low price and good quality, thus reducing their expenditures dramatically.

Secondly, China's investment has very low inhibition on the United States' economy, This means very important towards the US economy..

Therefore, the establishment of harmonious resources between China and the United States is fundamental to harmonious Sino-US relations. The fundamental development of china's economy is in line with the interests of the United States. My point is that we know that many of the Chinese exporting enterprises are headquartered in the United States. However, some of the key developments, especially through different ways in order to safeguard their own interests, are in fact to satisfy their personal interests. This is also a contribution to the interests among different countries

We hope that the harmony as a result of personal interests is also a contribution to the environment, so we need to cooperate closely on the environmental protection. Now there are more than 100 countries in the meeting, hoping to create a framework of environmental protection in 2012. In the past, the developed countries may have caused pollution to the environment. But now they aim to operate and solve the problems such as the greenhouse effect. And China made a good response: we did not bring about such a problem, but you did.

We can see that the environmental protection is a win-win project. It is consistent with individual interests, including the interests of the developed countries. The developed countries should build a harmonious and sustainable strategy for environmental protection. For example, developed countries can provide advanced technology to China and India so that they can develop in a healthier and more sustainable way.

I'm sorry that my answer is a little bit long. In a word, it is in the background of President Hu Jintao's concept. I think it is really worth supporting. It is a good suggestion and solution, which is also consistent with the interests of China and the United States.
