Address by Mr. Robert J. L. Hawke, former Prime Minister of Australia and the Global Chairman of the Asian-Pacific CEO Association

Good morning Ladies and gentlemen! We should continue to increase and strengthen cooperation to constantly enhance our ability, and seize various opportunities to pursue benefits for our peoples, enterprises, and governments. We can meet the challenges and promote the development together.

Today we are holding this international cooperation conference to discuss these topics here. I think China now is an ideal place for such a meeting, for it is playing an unparalleled role in the global economy. As to the experience of co-operation with China, it has dated back to my first time to China in1978—a very important year. That year meant the end of the 29-year planned economy during which we had taken China as a model of economic development since 1949. Now another 29 years has already passed. I suggest that we make a retrospect on late premier Deng Xiaoping's decisions made in 1978. What impacts did it have on china’s economic development, especially on the china's reform and opening-up?

Certainly, what I have said is to prove that we have made historical achievements during the past 20 years, especially since 1978. Now China's GDP is five times of that of the past. The significance of these developments to the Chinese people is that China’s development is becoming increasingly important to the development of the Asian regions and the world as a whole. China used to be a small economy, but now it has grown to rank as the third largest in the world, and its import and export volume, the third biggest. We can see that all the countries in the world are growing with a high speed, and China's rapid economic development and prosperity has made great contributions to the world economic development.

Finally, I would like to quote from President Hu Jintao's report in the 17th National People's Congress, and I very much agree with what he has said: the world today is undergoing enormous changes and adjustments. Economic globalization has been deepened in depth and breadth, and our economic, scientific and technological revolutions are also in acceleration. Interdependence among all countries has been deepened, but at the same time our world is not in peace. We are still facing many traditional and non-traditional threats, so as mutual efforts and co-operation on the environmental protection must be made for the benefits of all human beings. "

Thank you!
